Dignity begins before the journey

Use this practical checklist with the child and the adults responsible for their care. It is a learning resource, not a substitute for placement instructions or required caregiver training. Adapt it to the child’s needs and the guidance of their care team.

Prepare suitable luggage

Arrange a clean, durable suitcase or appropriate travel bag before packing. Check zippers, handles, wheels, space, and any additional bag needed. Use suitable luggage for belongings, never garbage bags.

Include the child

Explain what is happening in clear, age appropriate language. Ask what they want to keep nearby and how they would like help. Respect privacy and avoid rushing, photographing, or displaying personal belongings.

Protect what matters

Check familiar clothing, comfort items, books, and other belongings together. Keep sensitive documents and identifying information secure with the responsible adult. Do not discard or donate a child’s belongings without appropriate permission and involvement.

Confirm arrival

Name who is responsible for the luggage during the journey and at arrival. Check that every bag has arrived and that nothing has been left behind. Offer help unpacking at the child’s pace and a safe place for their belongings.

If luggage is missing

Ask the responsible care coordinator, agency, or receiving organization to arrange an appropriate bag. Make clear who will obtain it and when. Do not present an unconfirmed donation or delivery as a solution already in place.
